In 2002, we learned the sad news of the passing
of one of this industry and association’s great leaders -
Jim Vogel. Jim was the state president of WAHU in 2001.
We knew immediately that his contributions
must be honored in a very special way. So, it was at Jim’s
funeral that our then State President, Ric Joyner, announced that
WAHU would create a scholarship fund in Jim’s name. I am very
pleased to report this evening that this pledge has come true.
Jim was an effectual leader who was instrumental
in the creation of the four local chapters in our state. His leadership
also extended to the national level with NAHU. Jim believed that
it was important to be involved in the legislative process -
rather than sit on the sidelines and let others do it.
Additionally, Jim was a mentor to many. For
instance, at the 2001 NAHU Capitol Conference in Washington, D.C.,
we learned that the person who had agreed to build the WAHU website
was getting out of the business. Jim encouraged me take on the job,
which I did. He had similar influence on many of you in this room.
We are all grateful for his leadership.
On behalf of the W.A.H.U. Foundation, I am
pleased to announce that the WAHU Foundation has approved the creation
of the WAHU Foundation Scholarship Fund, which will facilitate the
James S. Vogel Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship fund will award four $1,000
scholarships to deserving children of WAHU members starting with
the school year 2005 to 2006. You will find the details in the brochure
at your table.
There is no better way for Jim’s memory
to continue to be honored, in my view, than by these student’s
accomplishments through the coming years. I am sure you will agree
and join me in our excitement over this special tribute to him.
